I began working in the field of mental
health and substance abuse in 1972. I was
a clinician and clinical supervisor working
with hardcore heroin addicts between 1972
and 1978. I did my graduate work at the
Virginia Commonwealth University School
of Social Work. My experience with Employee
Assistance Programs began in 1980 when,
as an Assistant Professor of Social Work
at James Madison University, I conducted
research on mental health issues and substance
abuse in the workplace. In 1983, after extensive
research, training and consultation with
EA pioneers Chuck Sapp, Jim Francek and
Bill Jernberg, I designed and implemented
the first Employee Assistance Program in
Monmouth/Ocean Counties, New Jersey.
Since 1984, I have been an independent
consultant working with Fortune 500 companies
to support health and productivity through
development of best in class health benefits
and services. I was the Keynote Speaker
at the International Employee Assistance
Professionals Association (EAPA) convention
in San Francisco. I am an active member
of the IBM Mental Health Advisory Board.
